Becky’s – A Richmond Institution

About a hundred years ago (OK, more like 10 years ago) I worked at the corner of 1st and Cary Streets. Across the street (on the north side of the street) was a breakfast and lunch place called Becky’s. I had a fabulous metabolism back then, so I ate breakfast there almost every day.
Becky’s has been around forever – long before I worked across the street from it. It has seen many different owners, operations, and managers, but the name has been the same, and the fare is consistently delicious diner food.
I wish I could tell you who the original Becky was, and what year the place opened the first time, but there is surprising little information out there on the internet. I suppose I could go talk to Julia, who has worked at the tiny diner for 42 years. She’s still there, and she remembered me when I walked through the door this past Friday for a nostalgic Becky’s breakfast.
The interior has changed quite a bit since the last time I was there, and they now serve cocktails, if you want to get a nice bloody mary or mimosa with your brunch. I heard that they tried opening in the evenings for a while, but during these winter months not enough people make it to that part of town.
I ordered a cheese omelet with hasbrowns, a side of bacon, and toast. My dad got a western omelet, hashbrowns, and rye toast. Everything was tasty. So tasty, in fact, that I neglected to take a picture of our food right away, and by the time I thought of it there was nothing left to photograph. I detected bits of bacon in the homefries (a nice touch) and my omelet was cooked perfectly and was delightfully cheesy. Dad’s omelet was likewise cooked perfectly, and his rye toast was buttered and golden crispy. We both had tea, and Alfred kept the refills coming.
Becky’s is once again under new management, and Laura (a recent transplant from Connecticut who thinks our winters are downright balmy, thank you) is working hard to figure out the best business model and plan for Becky’s. There might be some evening hours in the future, and look out for a website in the near future. For myself, I believe I will have to go back to try the salmon cakes, because I bet they are awesome.

Core Values – A Chesterfield County Initiative and a Local Artist’s Mission

Richmond’s celebrity storyteller Slash Coleman is participating in a Core Values Celebration that will take place at Tomahawk Creek Middle School at 7 PM on 2/25/10.
The Core Value Initiative is a program based on the book Educating for Character, written by Thomas Lickona. The program, adopted by the Chesterfield County School Board in 1999, promotes the ideas brought forth in Lickona’s book. Lickona says that by promoting safety, respect for property, parent productivity, and a good work ethic while a school provides more teaching time, a more caring school environment, and more positive structure in schoolwork that school will be able to ward off things like violence, vandalism, stealing, cheating, peer cruelty, bigotry, and self-destructive behavior.
Slash is giving the keynote address to kick off his new tour – “Core Values Tour 2010″ which will be bookable by schools, libraries, and other organizations around Virginia this year. His tour is sponsored by Richmond Young Writers, who are giving something back to the man who has given so much to the Richmond Community.
Slash Coleman is a Richmond storyteller who has done his one man show Off-Broadway (“The Neon Man and Me”) and on PBS, and he does a tremendous amount of philanthropic work in Richmond. We mentioned him in our post about Tinker’s, his aunt’s store where he lends a hand pretty often. This new tour, “2010 Core Values Tour,” is comprised of 60 minutes of songs and stories that promote honesty, respect, responsibility, and accountability. Look on his website for booking information.

Kid Gloves Moving – Great Service
A few days ago, a near and dear family member used Kid Gloves Moving to move all her earthly possessions from one house to another. I had never heard of this company before, so I decided that if they did a good job I might write them up here so that you, fellow Richmonders, might know about a different option than the usual suspects.
As it turns out, they did a FABULOUS job. They were prompt, quick, and cost-effective. They were courteous, gentile, and kind. They are not your typical movers.
Kid Gloves Moving is owned and operated by Gene Montagnino, a native New Yorker who’s been in the moving biz for 30 years. He has been in Richmond the past 11 years, and one of the reasons you may not have heard of him is that he runs a referral-based business. He does not advertise, per se. This post is not a paid advertisement. It’s just me telling you about a really good moving company.
One cool thing about Kid Gloves Moving is that Gene quotes a flat rate and sticks to it. The reason this is good is that many times, hourly quotes result in a team that isn’t really getting the lead out for you. Gene quotes a reasonable flat rate and his guys work quickly and efficiently. Heck, they didn’t even take bathroom breaks. They got a 4-bedroom house loaded, unloaded and placed in under three hours.
Gene, as the owner-operator, shows up to the move with his other two team members. One has been with him 5 years, the other about 1 1/2. They do 15-18 moves per month.
I recommend these guys. Enough said, right? To contact them, call 804-273-0707 or Gene directly at 804-216-6683. Gene will come out and quote you the job.
Furthermore, if you’re looking to move into corporate housing in Richmond, don’t forget about Dabney Properties!
