If you’re anything like me, you’re already freaking out about buying holiday gifts.  Even if you’re not like me, you might be thinking about those holiday gifts you’ll need to buy for friends, family and co-workers.

Might I suggest that you check out Tinker’s – a great shop in Richmond that pays extra-close attention to the spirit of the holidays?  Have someone to buy for who seems to have everything?  Go to Tinker’s.  Have someone who has a unique flair?  Shop at Tinker’s.  I guarantee you’ll find stuff there that you won’t find anywhere else in Richmond.  That’s because Sharon – owner of the shop – picks out inventory for her store that is made by people who blend art and function into delightful gift and decoration items.

Tinker’s is a family-owned place.  Sharon is there to tell you about where the items come from – who makes them, etc. and her niece makes the extra-special toffee that bears the shop’s name.  Award-winning storyteller Slash Coleman is Sharon’s nephew, and he has hands in almost everything at Tinker’s – helping upholster furniture, helping with the marketing, building the Facebook page, and working on the upcoming website.

Tinker’s is located at 2409 Westwood Avenue and is open M-F from 10-5, and Saturdays 10-4.  I highly suggest you toddle on over there and check out the holiday decor and pick up some gifts for the more discerning people on your gift list.

Vogue Flowers

When we talk about the best of Richmond florists, Vogue Flowers has to be on the list.  I don’t usually get up close and personal with you guys, but here is why I think so.  I don’t usually endorse things so enthusiastically (OK, maybe I do), but this is a true story.

At one point in my work life (before I was a glamorous writer) I worked in an office with a bunch of other females who were close in age to me.  I don’t really know how it happened, but somehow everybody’s boyfriends got in a “who can send our girlfriends more flowers” contest.  I think it started because someone’s boyfriend lived out of town, so he sent her some mail-order flowers and everyone was all “ooh ahh” and then probably went and called their boyfriend and fussed at him for never sending HER flowers.  Anywhoo.

So it was, like, week TWO of this nonsense, when all of the sudden yours truly gets the most beautiful, most beautifully arranged, freshest, most fragrant, most totally awesome flowers that anyone had gotten so far.  See, everyone’s boyfriends had been ordering the flowers from the same place, but SOMEBODY thought to order from Vogue.

Long story short, the Vogue flowers ended the contest.  They were, by far, the most impressive and prettiest flowers.  And so what if I sent them to myself?  That’s really beside the point, isn’t it?

Established in 1985 and beautifying the Richmond community since then, Vogue Flowers offers fresh flowers, silk flowers (I actually have a relative who ONLY likes silk flowers, so trust me, I know), and plants that are simply the best around.

Just ask all those green-faced girls from my old office.
