Julee Evans started out her career in children’s clothing as a sales rep for Kelly’s Kids.  Now she has opened her own boutique called Elephants and Giraffes Children’s Boutique.  Located in the Westbury Shopping Center, Elephants and Giraffes specializes in monogrammed and appliqued clothing and is so full of cute – they sell Kelly’s Kids, Castles and Crowns, and Hartstrings brands of kids clothes as well as others.

The store is located on the side of the Westbury shopping center, facing East Ridge Road.  You can’t miss it, it’s bright blue!  In addition to selling quality brand kids clothing, the boutique also sells consignment clothing – just call to make an appointment, or you can email them.

Carytown Burgers and Fries

I’ve been trying to spend a little more time in Carytown lately.  On a nice sunny day, there are few nicer things to do than to walk around our cute, cool, funky little shopping district.  I was there with my mom, and we were both pretty hungry.  I asked what she was in the mood for, and she said she was craving a cheeseburger.  How fortuitous, because we were right near Carytown Burgers & Fries.  I asked her if she’d ever been there and she hadn’t.  I couldn’t believe it!

How much do I actually need to talk about the food?  You’ve eaten the burgers.  You know they put Five Guys and all the other chains to shame.  You know they’re big, and cheesy, and delicious, and that the fries are great (even when you get them takeout), and that Carytown Burgers and Fries is awesome (and likely the best hangover food in all of Richmond).  So, I will tell you about my own personal experience eating there, because even though I’ve consumed my fair share of their burgers, I’d actually never eaten at Mike Barber’s fine establishment.

Not only was Mike, owner and burgermeister, behind the counter when we ordered, he also came outside to see if we were enjoying our lunch.  He chatted with us for a bit, and was super nice and charming, and just the kind of Carytown business owner that keeps us coming back there Tuesday after Tuesday.

You can learn all about Mike on the About CB&F page on the website, and you can learn all about the indoor and outdoor eating areas.  We ate outdoors, in the cozy patio area, with the charmingly wilted ceiling fans.  We left with full tummies and spirits full of goodwill and community. What more can you ask for?

A Classic Richmond Shopping Institution – Regency Mall

When Short Pump Town Center and Stony Point Fashion Park opened several years ago, we thought it was curtains for Regency Mall.  Despite it’s central location, the stores inside it were failing, business was bad, and the Taco Bell even pulled out of the food court.  I actually don’t remember if there was a Taco Bell at Regency Mall. But trust me, it was that dire.  With the demise of Cloverleaf and the creepy dwindlingness (yes, I made that word up) of Willow Lawn, I feared for my favorite mall in a big way.

Today, however, Regency Mall is doing a lot better.  It’s hard to find a place to park near my favorite entrance (which is not, incidentally, The Food Court), I almost get mowed down by octogenarians in sneakers on a per visit basis, and the Chick Fil A always has a line.  Ah, commerce.

Some of the anchor stores are still the same as they were in 1975, when the mall opened its doors.  The JCPenny and Sears are still kicking, and Richmond Biz Sense reported in 2008 that Regency had the second-lowest vacancy rate among Richmond shopping centers.

With the addition of Texas de Brazil and Charming CHARLIE, I have real hope that this mall is going to thrive.  Granted, I am not anywhere near the age of 21 (and  XXI Forever just opened a huge store there), but there is always Macy’s, Williams-Sonoma, and The Body Shop to keep me happy.
