Events at Art 6 – 2nd Annual Holocaust Remembrance Exhibit

The 2nd Annual Holocaust Remembrance Exhibit opened at Art 6 on May 7, 2010.  Though Yom Hashoah – Holocaust Remembrance Day – fell on April 11 this year, the month of May has been designated Holocaust Remembrance Month at Art 6, and the exhibit will run through the end of the month.

Art 6, a gallery at 6 East Broad Street in Downtown Richmond, is “a member-fun, non-profit gallery, dedicated to promoting and showcasing quality contemporary visual and performing arts, offering opportunities for education, community outreach and creative interaction.”  In a word, they are one of the champions in Richmond’s art movement, something we care very much about here at RichmondVAPresents, and something that benefits the whole community.

Two events of note regarding the Holocaust Remembrance Exhibit will take place on May 29 and May 30.  On May 29th, our friend Slash Coleman, local storyteller, blogger, and playwright, will present his piece called  Chaidentity – a combination of song, story, and poetry, along with Eliezer Sobel – author of The 99th Monkey:  A Spiritual Journalist’s Misadventures with Gurus, Messiahs, Sex, Psychedelics, and Other Conciousness-Raising Experiments.  The hour-long production will come from the perspective of two sons of Holocaust survivors, and promises to be a moving experience.  Tickets are $15 and will support the Richmond Holocaust Museum.

May 30th’s program is “Zay Gesundt!”  Beau Marie will present his documentary film which focuses on Holocaust survivor tales.  Admission is free, and the documentary will be opened by storyteller Les Schaffer.  Schaffer, a retired therapist, is a Richmond storyteller who also teaches storytelling classes at the Life-Long Learning Institute.  Beau Marie, creator of the documentary, is a local actor and filmmaker.  This event is free of charge.

In the spirit of the event, don’t forget about the Richmond Holocaust Museum, whose current exhibit is “Portraits of Zinkov” by Alan Shulman.

Short Pump’s The Wine Loft – A Review By The Good Wine Guru

March 15, 2010 by

Local Tweep, Snark, and candidate for Mr. Awesomeness 2010, George R. Perry, everyone!  Remember, behind every man is an awesome woman, and Mr. Perry’s awesome woman April is pictured with him below.

In addition to being one of Richmond’s cutest couples, most dynamic twitterers, and social media sweethearts, the Perrys also enjoy a nice glass of wine every now and then.  George is actually the Good Wine Guru, so who better to review The Wine Loft than him?  Here begin the words of George…

Just inside the border of Short Pump, across from the Kohls and Best Buy on West Broad Street is a new shopping center – the West Broad Village Community in Short Pump.  Featuring numerous new restaurants, grocers, shopping, and living space, West Broad Village has quickly become home to some of the most popular new spots in Richmond.  One of these is the Wine Loft.

A cross between a casual lounge and an upscale wine bar, the Wine Loft offers atmosphere mixed with great food and drink.  The food offerings aren’t your typical faire, being tailored more towards groups of diners with their tapas style of delivery.  However, any conversation about the Wine Loft must begin, obviously, with their wine selection.

As a regular wine drinker, I am always looking for places that offer a wide selection of wine at a wide range of prices.  Sure, there are nights that I’m willing to spend $50 or more on a bottle of wine, but there are just as many nights that I want to drink a couple of $7 glasses.  The Wine Loft caters to both of my moods.

With wine available both by the glass and bottle, there is something for every palate and pocketbook – red or white, sweet or dry, Old World or New World – and the staff is knowledgeable and willing to help you find something to fit your tastes if you’re not familiar with their offerings.

As for their food selection, they’ve done an excellent job of putting together a menu that allows you to pick what will best compliment your wine, or pick your wine to compliment what you’re eating.  While I’ve yet to have anything that I didn’t enjoy, the Baked Brie en Croute for two (and really more than that) is a must-have any time you go there.

Vanilla infused and topped with spiced pecans and a balsamic reduction and served with sliced baguette – which you’ll need more of and they’re happy to provide – the baked brie is a can’t miss no matter what you’re drinking.  For those looking for something more robust, the oven roasted lamb lollipops, shrimp and blue cheese in puff pastry, and shrimp and lump crab four cheese empanadas are all nothing short of amazing.

The food and drink aside, the Wine Loft itself has set itself up as a great place to spend an evening either for an intimate dinner date or for a casual gathering of friends or co-workers.  Low couches, chairs, and tables abound on both levels (that’s right, it has an upstairs), and a center communal table – raised and lighted – is a great gathering place for groups or couples.

No matter the occasion or the size of the dining party, the Wine Loft is the perfect place to spend an evening and one you’ll want to return to time and again.

Restaurant Review – Summer Shack in Richmond, Virginia

January 18, 2010 by
Filed under Featured, Restaurants, Totally Richmond

Drive out Broad Street a ways (a long ways) and you will find The Summer Shack positioned jauntily on the lot.  A small boat decorates the front.  You walk in, and the decor is decidedly beach-themed.  Volleyball nets and flip flops decorate the walls.  The tables and chairs are mismatched in a charming, not messy way.  The lady working greeted us with a smile.  We were, as they say, so far so good.

The place is located at 12859 Broad Street Rd.  This place has been Granpa Eddie’s, Crazy Eddie’s, and about 3 other things in the last 5 years.  Hopefully The Summer Shack will make it, because I liked it a lot.  It’s a seafood place, and it’s reasonably priced and tasty.

The menu offers Appetizers (in the “Get Your Feet Wet” section of the menu), steamed crab legs, shrimp, clams, or oysters (“Steamers”), sandwiches and baskets of fried things (“I’m Kinda Hungry”), and entrees (“I’m So Hungry”).  They also have a menu section for “Menehunes,” which is technically a term for a folklorish creature like a leprechaun.  It’s probably a Hawaiian term for “little folks,” or “children,” in this case.  It’s got standard kid fare, and is reasonably priced.

My luncheon companion dined on tuna tacos – not blackened like he’d had them previously.  I sampled a hunk of tuna, as it looked delicious, and it was.  He enjoyed the meal, but not as much as he had when he’d gotten them served blackened.

I got the fried shrimp basket, because I obviously have a death wish.  Just kidding.  I just really like friend shrimp and hadn’t had any in about 12 years, so I went for it.  The shrimp were plump and juicy, lightly breaded and tasty.  The fries at this place are killer – I mean REALLY good.  Maybe the best fries I’ve had since the lovely Boardwalk Fries was a staple at every American mall on the East Coast.  Here is a pic of my yummy lunch:

and me posing like the fool I am with my lunch:

Overall, I really liked this place.  I would like to go back for dinner and try out the “Oysters Goochland,” which the menu tells me comes with applewood smoked bacon and crab for a cool $12.00.  That sounds worth it to me.
