The Richmond SPCA – Every Life is Precious

Working with homeless and abused animals can be a difficult job.  The sheer number of four-legged orphans in Richmond and the surround area is staggering.  So it is with much pride that we boast an organization that is dedicated to the preservation and protection of our furry companions; without whom our own humanity might be less evolved.  The Richmond SPCA was established in 1891, and for over a century has work diligently with the community to help decrease the number of homeless animals in the area by providing a safe haven for dogs and cats found lost or abandoned.

The Richmond SPCA stands on the principle that “every life is precious”.  They heavily promoted education, community involvement and volunteerism as means to provide the best care for animals in need.  They also provide vet services, training programs and free or low-cost spay and neutering for adopted animals and pets in the surrounding area.  Notably, the organization is a no-kill shelter, choosing instead to rely on generous foster homes and vet clinics to help disperse the population of the shelter to prevent overcrowding.  The Richmond SPCA also works closely with Hanover Animal Control and other local county shelters to save dogs and cats from shelters that euthanize.

The SPCA is based in the Robins-Starr Humane Society on Hermitage Road (just behind the baseball diamond).  Adoption events are hosted regularly, both at the shelter and various other locations around the city.  Those interested in adopting are encouraged to come visit and use the shelters “Meet Your Match” system, which is designed to help pair you with the best fit for your family and living situation, based on personality and temperament.

Belle Isle – The Peaceful Center of Richmond

It isn’t often that once can find the peace and quiet of the outdoors in the middle of a bustling city.  Like so many other wonders that can be found within the boundaries of the City of Richmond, Belle Isle provides a welcome change of pace from what one might expect to be nestled in the center of an ever-growing metropolis.  This island, located in the middle of the James River in the heart of the city, offers its own surprises and opportunities for enjoyment and discovery.

Like the surrounding city, Belle Isle finds its roots steeped in Civil War history.  The island served as the site of a prison camp for Union soldiers during the war, many of which were capture soldiers from the 2^nd Tennessee Infantry, taken during the Battle of Rogersville in November of 1863. The Battle of Walkerton (which took place March 2, 1864) proved to be a failed attempt to rescue the starving men. Even today, remains of the buildings used in the prison camp can be found scattered across the island.  Ruins of an armory and an iron factory still stand against the elements as a testament to the harsh history of the place.

The tragic history seems a distant memory, however, when one traverses the paths and trails of the island.  Modern amenities such as picnic shelters, rest areas, learning centers and even a tricky rope bridge provide visitors with the opportunity to enjoy the surrounding nature comfortably and safely. So when one sits at the top of the quiet island, overlooking the James River or Hollywood Cemetery, it is easy to forget that over the other shoulder sits an entire city full of people.  Until they trip over you with their dogs and their beer coolers, that is…

Belle Isle Richmond Virginia History

Belle Isle

Belle Isle is located west of Richmond, Virginia in the James River. During the Civil War, this small and beautiful island was used as a Civil War Prison. Holding only a few small shacks, the island afforded no protection from the elements to the Union soldiers who were captured and taken there. Prisoners were given tents to sleep in but the tents numbered 3000, while the soldiers held there, numbered almost 10,000 by 1863. A hospital for prisoners and an iron factory were located on the island, but no barracks were ever built for the prisoners, hence the continuous exposure to weather played a large role in the death toll on Belle Isle.
