La Diff

Take a walk down to Shockoe Bottom and the historic canal isn’t all you’ll see.  You’ll also run into some of the best eating and shopping in Richmond.  For the shopping side of things, you don’t get much better than La Difference.  Located at 125 S. 14th Street, this two-floor wonderland of furniture is a point of pride for Richmonders.  Ikea this place is not.

Voted Best Furniture Showroom AND Best Store for Modern/Contemporary Furniture in Richmond Magazine’s Best & Worst of 2009, La Diff (as us locals call it – mainly because we can’t pull off a convincing French accent) is pricey, sure, but if you’re looking for some really different and cool furniture that is well made, this is the place to go.  And, as Richmond Magazine points out, La Diff is committed to environmental awareness – almost a third of their stock is green furniture.

La Diff was born in 1980, and owners Andy Thornton and Sarah Paxton have grown their business from a small store in Charlottesville, VA to their huge space in Richmond’s historic Shockoe Bottom.  They’ve hosted a barrage of community events, and are active in the community themselves.

Do you absolutely need some modern-style furniture for your home?  Maybe not right this second.  But do you need to visit La Diff and breathe in some quality Richmond retail?  Absolutely.  Get thee there now.
