Heroes & Ghosts – Carytown Tattos & Piercing

You don’t have to be in Richmond very long to notice something – especially in the summertime. Bear with us – because there is a point. In the summertime, girls wear pretty summer dresses and skin-baring clothes. Boys wear A-shirt tank tops and shorts. Because all this skin is showing, you might notice, especially if you’re in the downtown area, that many of these guys and gals are awfully colorful.
That’s right. It’s unconfirmed statistically, but Richmond does call itself the Tattoo Capital of the South. With over 188 tattoo parlors in the Richmond area, it must certainly come close.
You might not be shopping for a tattoo (of course, you might be shopping for a tattoo, and you know that’s totally cool with us), but even if you aren’t you don’t want to miss a visit to Carytown’s Heroes and Ghosts. You can get tattooed, pierced, or shop for art-inspired clothing and apparel. You can browse the gallery of local artwork that the owners display and sell on consignment. In a word, you can shop there.
Located in the heart of Carytown (right across from Galaxy Diner), Heroes and Ghosts is fairly new – owners Chris Hensley and Greg French opened the doors on New Year’s Eve – a brilliant move considering there were 20,000 people in Carytown that night. They’ve been going steady ever since. Greg himself is one of the vastly talented tattoo artists, and Chris handles the piercings and does some tattooing himself. Despite the fact that these guys are heavily tattooed and pierced themselves, you can’t help but feel like you’ve walked into a family-type atmosphere.
Granted, it’s a hallucinatory-image-laden family atmosphere, but the store is bright, clean, and laid out really well to maximize the art while avoiding a cramped or overly cluttered feeling. Greg and Chris are totally professional and polite, and put you at ease right away, whether you’re shopping for t-shirts or contemplating a permanent addition to your epidermis.
They say the times are changing, and this retail testament to local art and the tattoo culture is well worth a visit.
