Dooley Mausoleum - Maymont Park by rvaphotodude.

The mausoleum for the Dooley family on the grounds of what used to be their land and what is now Maymont Park.

Major James Henry Dooley and his wife Sallie are interred in this mausoleum.  They didn’t have children, so it’s just those two buried in there.  Major Dooley was a member of The First Virginia Infintry in the Civil War, so he was originally buried in Hollywood Cemetary along with the member of his unit when he was in the war.  Not long after that he was moved back to this mausoleum on his property.  Sallie died three years after he did, so it’s not clear whether he was moved before or after that, but they are both there now.

Major Dooley was very active in the Richmond community.  Granted, the Dooleys were LOADED, but they did good things with their money, like serving on the board of St. Joseph’s Orphanage (now St. Joseph’s Villa) and on the board of the Medical College of Virginia.  They also helped build Dooley Hospital, and when Major Dooley died, Sallie donated a sizeable chunk of change to erect the Richmond Public Library in honor of her husband.

We can’t forget, either, that they built the beautiful house that now sits in Maymont Park, because that park itself used to be the Dooley’s, well, yard.  The Dooleys left it all to the city.  Now we have the lovely Maymont Park, which is great for weddings, trips with kids, and (trust me) REALLY large games of hide-and-go-seek.  Also, because the Dooleys didn’t have children they donated 3 million whoppers to St. Joseph’s Orphanage.
