What to Do In Richmond, VA – Halloween Weekend (10/30/09 – 11/1/09

One of the coolest things to happen in Richmond is Gallery 5′s Carnival of 5 Fires. Few places in our fair city put the time and effort that Gallery 5 does – a pull-out-all-the-stops, spare-no-effort type of event that will bombard you with visual, musical, and performance art and put you into a total sensory overload. In a good way, of course.
This year, the folks at Gallery 5 are giving Richmond a weekend to remember. There are events Friday night, Saturday night, and Sunday evening, and each one promises to be the party of the year. How does that work? I’m not exactly sure, but I’m planning to check it out.
Friday night October 30 at 7PM kicks off the weekend with the Dark Queen’s Boudoir: A Burlesque Variety Show. Tickets are $12 and the show features performances by some of Richmond’s premium burlesque performers. Here is G5′s description of the event:
“For hundreds of years, The Dark Queen has been collecting her favorite pets – living dolls of mystery and vice. For one night, you are invited into her den to see her collection of Southern Gothic Oddities. Be warned… her enchanted creatures are more intoxicating then the opium dens she often frequents. In honor of All Hallow’s Eve, The Queen has granted permission to the citizens of Richmond to attend her yearly festival of lascivious beauty. Come sit at her table, feast on her bounty, and fall in love with the dark arts….”
Saturday night is a good and proper (if by proper you mean spooky, exciting and sexy – which of course I do) Halloween party. Tickets are $10, unless you wear a costume, in which case they’re $8. And why wouldn’t you wear a costume? What are you, 80? My grandma’s 83 and she wears a costume. Get in the spirit, dang it. G5 Fire will be out in the street to greet you – and if you’ve never seen that you have GOT to. People who have an amazing command and control of fire. You’ll want to learn to twirl and breathe fire. Don’t try it at home…
Saturday’s (10/31/09 – Halloween, ya’ll) performances include Lonesome Liz’s Mojo Sideshow, HotDamns, and so much more. You can get your cards read by someone who knows how to read ‘em, and in addition, there is going to be some amazing art on display. But that’s Gallery 5 all the time.
Sunday, November 1 at 7PM brings you to the end of your Halloween weekend and the Gumbo & Ghosts Dinner Theater and Seance. Talk to your departed loved ones, plus with the ghosts who are in residence at Gallery 5. See some great theater art, and listen to some great music while you wind down in the spookiest way possible.
I know I normally give you some options on what to do in Richmond for the weekends, but I honestly can’t find anything near as cool as this that is happening, so this is all you get from me.
Check with me next week to see what’s what in Richmond, VA for the weekend of November 6, 2009.

What to Do in Richmond, VA – Weekend 10/9/09 – 10/11/09

It’s Friday, October 9, 2009, RVA’ers, and we’re back to tell you what’s what for this weekend. Between the Richmond Folk Festival and various nighttime activities there is plenty to keep you busy. Read on for more information.
Of course the biggest news for this weekend is the Richmond Folk Festival, starting tonight and going all the way through Sunday, rain or shine. Which is good, because it’s probably going to rain on Saturday (10/10/09). Don’t worry, the music will play on. Just take an umbrella. For a preview of bands to watch, check out Chris Bopst’s preview on RVA News. That dude knows what he’s talking about. For those who have been living under a rock, the Richmond Folk Festival is what was formerly the National Folk Festival (that was held in Richmond). The National Folk Festival moved on to literally greener pastures (Montana) and Richmond decided we’d have our own darn Folk Festival. So 2008 marked the first Richmond Folk Festival and the tradition continues this year. It’s a big deal, and you should check it out. It kicks off tonight at 6:00 PM, going until 10:30, and it’s on noon to 10:30 Saturday October 10, 2009 and noon to 7:00 Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009. Stick around Saturday evening for the Jazz-style parade in honor of Richmond’s Gary Gerloff, who passed in May.
As long as you’re hanging around in that downtown area, you might think about hopping over to The Canal Club for some Varietease. Richmond Varietease‘s Tassels of Terror kicks off at 8:00PM and costs $10 at the door. If you see The Checkout Girl there, make sure you buy her a drink. She just had a birthday.
For Friday (that’s today October 9th in the year 2009, if my internal clock isn’t totally off) other options for something to do include:
Everclear, Paper Tongues, and Tracy Lyons at The Hat Factory. This is the place that used to be Toad’s Place. I haven’t been there yet. Do you have comments about it? Comment!
Old Towne Petersburg (remember that post about Monroe Properties?) is hosting Friday for the Arts from 6-10 tonight. Head down North Sycamore.
For Saturday, you can go to Plaza Bowl to see some bands and throw some tiny balls. Or, check Style Weekly or Richmond Inside Out for more information on stuff to do. If you know about something we don’t, please post it in the comments. We love to hear from you! Remember to check back next Friday, October 16, 2009 for all the Richmond, VA weekend events.

River City (Richmond Va) YouTube Review

River City (Richmond Va) YouTube Review
Yo Yo Yo, Richmond Virginia enters the YouTube world of city rap songs. Sam Abouhasira and Blaine Lay featured in the video are financial services advisers at First Market Bank branches here in little old Richmond Va. Their future is bright according to the comments and number of views the River city (Richmond Va) video has amassed on the popular YouTube account.
The River City (Richmond Va) Rap video is a take off of the popular “Arlington: The Rap” video that made a big splash on computer screens around the county.
The lyrics are great, the beat memorable and the dance moves of two non rappers turned rappers are inspiring.
The visual scenes of the city of Richmond are focused on many of the well know sites: Monument Ave, Grace Street, Byrd Theater, Shockoe Bottom and of course the James River Rocks (where they wade in their crocks!) The visual tour of the “Statues, Statues, Statues coming at you” and “Museums, Museums, How could you not see ‘em” emphasizes the long standing history of our fair city Richmond, Va.
RVA River City
We mean business
But we stay pretty
From the North to the South
East End to West End
We got history in the making
So welcome to Richmond!
So RVA, what do you think about the River City (Richmond Va) Youtube Video? Are you down with 804?
All comments welcome, loved to hear your take!
